University of Ma’arif Nahdlatul Ulama (UMNU) Kebumen’s English Language Education Program Collaborates with Indonesian School in Kuala Lumpur to Strengthen National Identity among Migrant Workers’ Children
Kebumen, August 2, 2022 – The English Language Education Program at the University of Ma’arif Nahdlatul Ulama (UMNU) Kebumen has embarked on a meaningful collaboration with the Indonesian School Kuala Lumpur (SIKL) in Malaysia. This partnership aims to contribute to the strengthening of national identity among students who are the offspring of Indonesian migrant workers.
The collaboration comes as a response to the need for Indonesian students studying abroad to maintain a strong connection with their cultural heritage and national identity. Hastri, a lecturer in the English Language Education Program, emphasized the importance of fostering an understanding of Indonesia’s unique identity, even when students are overseas.
“As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, it’s crucial for Indonesian students living abroad to not only excel academically but also to remain deeply rooted in their cultural and national values. This collaboration provides an opportunity to instill a sense of pride and awareness of Indonesia’s history, diversity, and contributions,” Hastri stated.
The engagement program was carried out at the Indonesian School Kuala Lumpur (SIKL) on August 2, 2022, aligning with the celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day. The program’s activities were designed to celebrate the spirit of independence while instilling a sense of belonging and patriotism among the students. Various interactive sessions, cultural performances, and discussions on Indonesian history were organized to engage the students and enhance their connection with their homeland.
The collaboration was warmly received by both UMNU and SIKL communities. Dr. Rahayu, the head of the English Language Education Program, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership’s potential impact: “This collaboration goes beyond geographical boundaries. It’s a testament to our commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are not only proficient in English but also proud ambassadors of Indonesian culture and heritage.”
As globalization continues to shape the educational landscape, initiatives like this collaboration between UMNU and SIKL serve as a beacon of cultural preservation and national identity reinforcement, ensuring that future generations of Indonesian students abroad remain deeply connected to their roots.
